It can take time to mend those broken hearts.

First, know that you aren't replacing your other pet. They cannot be replaced any more than you can replace a parent or sibling or spouse. It's just not possible. But a new pet can give you another way to share the love you have in your heart. But how do you know when you're ready to do that?

1. Have a grieved for your lost pet enough?

2. Is everyone in your household on the same page about the decision to take on a new pet? Everyone should have a say to make sure they will be involved in the care, feeding, and nurturing of the new addition.

3. Do you have other pets? How will they react? Animals grieve too, but a new pet isn't the answer for every animal. Be sure to consider them in this decision and watch them closely after bringing any new animal into the household to make sure they are still healing.

4. Make sure YOU are ready. If this is the first time your home has been pet-free in 10 years, should you take a vacation? Do some home repairs? Go back to school? Move? You may want to take on these changes before you take on another pet.

The River Valley Pet Cremation Society in Hastings, MN, knows how hard it can be to lose a pet. We've supported many families going through pet loss and know it can take time to mend those broken hearts. Be patient. You'll know when the time is right.
