Dealing with Guilt After Putting a Pet to Sleep

River Valley Pet Cremation • May 26, 2026

It's a heavy load to carry.

Really heavy at times. But by shifting your perspective you can reframe the situation and move toward self-forgiveness.

1. View euthanasia is an act of compassion to prevent suffering, not as the process that takes a life.

2. Educate yourself about the quality of life your pet had before  (or would have had) if they weren't euthanized.

3. Write your feelings down and then forgive yourself for any mistakes you may have made. There are no perfect humans. You are one of those. Write about your love for your pet too. That part can be really healing.

4. Share your memories by talking about your pet, making a memory book, having a special day every year to remember your pet, or create a memorial.

5. Be kind to yourself.

Compassionate, loving pet owners will do anything to spare their pets pain and suffering; that's what makes them good owners. At the River Valley Pet Cremation Society in Hastings, MN, we see wonderful owners who want a respectful, dignified, private goodbye for their beloved companions; and that's exactly what we provide.
