Mia came into this world on the first anniversary of my grandson Austin’s birthday after he died in March 2010 at age 7. She was a gift from her first breath to her last. She brought joy to me on a very sad day through the announcement from her breeder that she had arrived. She continued to bring joy to me, my son Zack, and the many children and adults she interacted with as a Certified Therapy Dog. She worked in schools through my job at Northeast Metro 916 Intermediate School District bringing comfort to staff and students and helping to teach children with severe disabilities how to care for dogs. She loved the staff and students and they delighted in her running free in the halls skidding to a stop for pets and treats. Mia also modeled very briefly for Barbara O’Brien and her image was found on the Flagology website gracing their merchandise.
Mia competed in Agility achieving several titles. She also competed in Nosework in one of the first group of dogs in Minnesota and Wisconsin to title in that sport. She was more than a Therapy dog, Agility and Nosework competitor, she was a dog who enjoyed bringing a bit of terrier naughtiness to our lives by escaping our fenced in yard as often as she could to complete her neighborhood walkabout. Most frequently she returned home and stood on the front step barking as if to say “I’m back, for Pete’s sake, let me in!” Mia was a big dog in a tiny body who left huge footprints on our hearts.
